The Knysna Municipality is a Category B municipality located in the Garden Route District of the Western Cape. The area comprises 11 wards with a population of 96 055 and a total of 1059 km² that stretches from Swartvlei in Sedgefield in the West to Brackenhill in the East.

The Municipal Finance Management Internship Programme (MFMIP) is a structured initiative by National Treasury aimed at capacitating young graduates with practical experience and high-quality training in Local Government Financial Management. The internship provides an excellent opportunity to develop technical and professional skills in line with the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA), No. 56 of 2003.

Internship Benefits and Focus Areas

  • Work experience across Finance, Internal Audit, and Risk departments
  • Exposure to GRAP standards, municipal policies, and MFMA implementation
  • Alignment with National Treasury’s Finance Intern Skills Development Programme
  • Progress toward a qualification in Municipal Finance Management as per the Minimum Competency Levels Regulations (Gazette 29967 of 15 June 2007)

Minimum Requirements

  • Must have matriculated in the Knysna municipal area
  • Must possess a completed 3-year Bachelor’s Degree or National Diploma (NQF Level 7) with majors in:
    • Accounting
    • Business
    • Finance

    Internal Audit and/or Risk Management is advantageous

  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Computer literacy is essential

Additional Notes

  • Interns will be required to sign both an Internship Agreement and Employment Contract
  • Participation in training and workplace programmes is compulsory
  • Interns will be subject to the Municipal Disciplinary Code
  • Annual increases apply as determined by the Bargaining Council
  • Employment Equity and Gender Equality principles apply – preference will be given to female applicants
