Purpose of the Job

  • The Environmental Officer in support to the Environmental Manager is responsible for the coordination, administration and coaching to successfully manage the ISO14001:2015 Environmental Management system to ensure compliance to environmental legislative requirements, alignment to ISO14001:2015 certification standards and drive improvements at the McCain Foods plants for Delmas and Springs relative to the management system

Job Accountabilities

Management of ISO14001:2015 policies, procedures, legislation and regulation for Delmas and Springs

  • Monitor environmental compliance to current policies, procedures, registers, legislation and regulation for Delmas and Springs
  • Continuous monitoring of updates in legislation which might impact procedures, policies, permits and licensing. Communicate to Environmental Manager
  • Attend Environmental Forum meetings
  • Renew any environmental licensing / permits before expiration
  • Coordinate and schedule environmental surveys based on environmental compliance requirements
  • Apply for any updated environmental licensing / permits as and when required

No major audit findings for environmental compliance ISO14001:2015 with relation to internal audits and external audits (Environmental legal compliance audits, WUL audits, ISO14001:2015 EMS audits, department of water and sanitation audits and Global Environmental compliance audits

  • Monitor compliance status via plant inspections, legal registers, internal plant-based registers, validity of all permits and licensing as per legislation and regulatory ISO14001:2015 requirement.
  • Report risks, loading of environmental incidents / non-conformances on intelex. Responsible for root cause analysis, corrective and preventative action.
  • Schedule and conduct environmental internal audits when and where required

Monitoring the budget, external complaints and Intelex system

  • Oversee financial activities, i.e. requisitions, purchase orders, goods received and payment confirmation as well as assisting with annual departmental budget
  • Assist in complaints investigation
  • Assist in monitoring and management of the intelex system

Environmental awareness training & monthly environmental management meetings

  • Coordinate and conduct Environmental awareness training for both Springs and Delmas Plant
  • Draft and circulate of monthly toolbox talks
  • Draft, minute and update monthly environmental management meetings

Borehole consumption monitoring

  • By daily evaluation of the Polar Monitoring program, to monitor safe abstraction of borehole water within allowed allocation and enough time for recovery of aquifer.
  • Weekly monitoring of abstraction volumes to ensure we remain in allowed abstraction volumes as per water use license.

Environmental risk management

  • Environmental hazard identification
  • Conduct Environmental risk assessments
  • Implementation of risk control measures utilizing the environmental hierarchy of risk control

Monitoring and evaluating environmental performance

  • Evaluate weekly and monthly third-party contractor reports. Report any deviations to Environmental Manager
  • Evaluate test results received from third party contractors in relation to our permit and licensing conditions and parameters.
  • Reporting any deviations to Environmental Manager
  • Evaluate environmental survey outcomes and report deviations to Environmental Manager

MDI programme for environmental

  • Coaching on MDI program
  • Reporting on MDI progress daily and weekly related to environmental performance on KPI’s defined as per global

Job Holder Requirements

  • National diploma / Degree in Environmental Management
  • Approximately 3 – 5 years relevant experience in a food production environment with experience in developing and continuous compliance to ISO14001:2015 Environmental Management systems.
  • Minimum 4 years ISO 14001:2015 internal audit experience or exposure
