Job Description

  • The role reports to and support the Group Company Secretary & Head of Legal.
  • A Senior Legal Advisor with corporate and compliance experience. Responsibilities will typically include providing legal advice and support to the company, with specific focus on ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
  • The role requires a strong understanding of corporate law, regulatory frameworks, and risk management principles.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Providing general Legal Advice
  • Legal Risk Management associated with the company’s operations and transactions, including the updating of the Group’s Business Risk Registers with the respective Risk Owners on a quarterly basis
  • Legislative Compliance Management – responsible for implementing compliance frameworks, monitoring compliance by and advising the company in relation to all applicable laws (including POPI and PAIA), regulations and internal policies
  • Assist with the formulation and drafting of internal policy documents to ensure they comply with relevant statutory and/or legal requirements
  • Chairing internal disciplinary appeal hearings
  • Commercial Contracting including the drafting, reviewing, and negotiating of various legal agreements
  • Manage litigation matters
  • Participate in various projects identified by the department
  • Dispute Resolution
  • Stakeholder Management that includes collaborating with internal stakeholders, external legal counsel, and regulatory bodies
  • Management of the group’s IP (including trademarks and other IP related matters)
  • Ad hoc company secretarial support as may be required

Experience required:

  • 5+ years of relevant experience as an in-house legal counsel in a corporate and/or reputable law firm
  • Strong knowledge of corporate law principles and compliance
  • In depth knowledge of relevant South African laws and regulations, including but not limited to the Companies Act, Protection of Personal Information Act, Promotion of Access to Information Act

Qualifications:

  • LLB Degree
  • Admitted attorney with 5+ years post articles experience
  • A post graduate certificate / degree in compliance management will be advantageous
